Understanding Erf Numbers in South Africa
Every property in South Africa has a unique erf number. Here is what it means and how to find yours.
An erf number is the unique identifier assigned to a piece of land in a proclaimed township in South Africa.
What is an Erf?
The word "erf" comes from the Afrikaans word for a plot of land. In the deeds registry, every property within a township is assigned a sequential erf number.
How Erf Numbers Work
An erf number is always linked to a township. For example, "Erf 1960, Durbanville" refers to a specific plot. The combination of erf number AND township makes it unique.
Where to Find Your Erf Number
- On your title deed
- On your municipal rates account
- Through a DeedsCheck property search
Portions
When an erf is subdivided, each piece gets a portion number. Portion 0 refers to the original undivided erf.
